Walking for a cleaner Camden this National Clean Air Day

National Clean Air Day, on Thursday 16 June, is the UK’s largest day of action to tackle air pollution. This year Camden will be holding an Acting for Cleaner Air event in Somers Town which includes an air quality themed walking tour and a range of advice and offers to help you clean up Camden’s air.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet member for a Sustainable Camden

“Clean Air Day marks the key day of campaigning action to tackle the air quality health crisis, and this year we are pleased to be delivering and supporting a range of events in partnership with other organisations across the borough.

“Camden Council was the first local authority to commit to achieving the updated World Health Organization air quality guidelines and is committed to realising the vision for a borough in which no person experiences ill health as a result of the air they breathe.

“It is important that we all do what we can, collectively and individually, to help protect our health by avoiding air pollution and by reducing our contribution to it locally.”

Acting for Cleaner Air event – 16 June at 2pm

The Somers Town community will be hosting a free Acting for Cleaner Air event and walking tour on the afternoon of Thursday 16 June in Somers Town, to showcase how we can all help clean the air we breathe and protect our health while out and about and at home.

Open from 2 to 5pm, at Polygon Road Open Space outside Edith Neville School, there will be a range of stalls and activities including:

  • Indoor and outdoor air quality advice
  • How to measure local air pollution, including inside your home, workplace and school
  • Borrowing a bike from the council for free (including electric cargo bikes)
  • Gardening tips and plant giveaway
  • Lower pollution walking route guides

The event is free and open to all.

Footways and London Living Streets will also be leading a walking tour of Somers Town to highlight less polluted routes around Camden whilst uncovering the history of Somers Town. The walk will last about 30 mins and will feature air monitoring stations and other local initiatives to reduce local air pollution. There will also be the opportunity to learn about the Somers Town Future Neighbourhood 2030 project, which is delivering a range of environmental projects in the area to transform the area into a sustainable neighbourhood of the future. The goal is to help residents, local businesses and organisations understand how air pollution and the climate crisis are affecting them, and how we can work together on activities that are good for the environment, your wallet, and quality of life.  Find out more: Have Your Say Today – Somers Town - Future Neighbourhoods 2030 – Commonplace
