The Euston Skills Centre – teaching construction in our communities

On Thursday 8 February Camden Council officially launched its newest community-based skills centre in partnership with United Colleges Group, focussing on the practical skills our residents need to work in the construction industry.

In 2015, Camden secured over 100 assurances from the government to help protect the lives and livelihoods of our residents and businesses from the impact of HS2 construction.

The Euston Skills Centre was one of these assurances, with Camden securing a commitment of £4.1m to support the construction and operation the centre, along with further funding from the GLA to support the fitout and installation of Green Skills equipment, additional funding was secured through the Business Rates Retention Scheme.

Councillor Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council

The opening of the new Euston Skills Centre is brilliant news for our community.

Working alongside the United Colleges Group it will deliver training, skills, qualifications and experience for local residents as well as support for the community to get into good work.

It is ideally positioned to benefit from the construction of Euston Station in the long term and we are determined that all residents who live near the site see direct benefits from development.

In Camden we are passionate about supporting good quality apprenticeships and we are delighted to announce during national apprentice week that the Euston Skills Centre will be make a significant contribution by delivering over 150 construction apprenticeships each year.

We are also proud to be working with UCG and the GLA to develop a Green Skills Hub. We have big ambitions around tackling climate change and delivering warm, energy efficient homes and this hub will help deliver the skills and training to meet those ambitions.

Councillor Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council

The centre is a really practical space – with classrooms, CSCS test centre, a dedicated workshop space which includes specialist machinery rooms and an outside training area where students learn practical skills as part of their qualification.

We also run Camden Apprenticeships, an award-winning service that has created almost 900 apprenticeship vacancies since it was set up in 2010. We support local employers and the council to create apprenticeship vacancies for people aged 16 plus who are Camden residents, former Camden secondary school students or Camden care leavers.

  • The courses available are Electrical level 2, Plumbing level 1 and 2 for ages 16 plus (there is no age limit), Carpentry and Joinery level 1 and 2 for the same age range and Multi Skills level 1 for 16- to 18-year-olds. In addition to this the centre offer CSCS Testing, Health and Safety and employability courses which are linked opportunities in Camden.
  • United Colleges Group secured funding for the Euston Skills Centre through the GLA Strategic Development Fund. These funds have been used to pay for the installation of Air Source Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal and PV and Electric Vehicle charging. This equipment will be used to support the delivery of a curriculum offering a range of accredited and non-accredited training for students, apprentices and the upskilling / retraining of existing staff.
