There is still time to register to vote, apply to vote by post or proxy, and apply for a Voter Authority Certificate if you don’t have photo ID.

Camden’s Electoral Services are currently contacting every household by email and post to find out if there are any changes, so they can remove people who no longer live there and invite new residents to register to vote. This is called the annual canvass.

You must reply, even if you are already on the electoral register.

The annual canvass helps keep the electoral register up to date, but you still need to make sure you’re registered to vote

How to respond to the annual canvass

Only one person needs to respond on behalf of the household.

Remember to include any 16 or 17-year-olds in your household in your response, so they can be invited to register to vote now and are ready to vote in elections as soon as they turn 18.

If you get an email, it will be from electoral.services.camden.council@notifications.service.gov.uk with the subject line: ‘Annual Canvass 2026’. This will provide you with the security codes and instructions you need to complete this online.

If you receive this information by post, you will receive a pink, yellow or green form.

Pink or yellow form – Someone from your household must reply to this form. Check the details on the form and follow the instructions about how to confirm that the information we have is correct or let us know of any changes needed, for example, if someone has moved out/in.

Green form – Someone will need to check the details are correct, but you only need to contact us if you need to update any information, for example, if someone has moved out or in, changed their name, or you want to change your voting preference.

Postal votes

If you have a postal vote, we may be in contact. We are required by law to ask you to refresh your postal application every three years, so to keep your postal vote for future elections, please reply with the information we need.

If you don’t have a postal vote, you can apply on the GOV.UK website or contact Camden Electoral Services for a paper application.

Voter ID

If you vote at a polling station, you will need to show accepted photo ID. If you do not have accepted photo ID, you will need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

About the electoral register

The annual canvass ends on 30 November 2026. Anyone registering to vote for the first time during this period will join the electoral register via a monthly rolling addition or 1 December 2026 when the revised register is published.

There are two versions of the electoral register. The full register is used for electoral purposes only, while the open register is an extract of the full register that can be purchased by any individual or organisation.

If you’re currently registered to vote, your email or letter will state if you are listed on the full or open electoral register. When you register to vote or update your details, you can choose to opt out of the open register. This does not affect your right to vote.

Eligibility

You can vote in the local elections if you registered to vote by the deadline (Monday 20 April, 23.59pm), you’re 18 or over on polling day and a British or an Irish citizen, or if you’re a qualifying Commonwealth or EU citizen living in Camden.

The elections

About the local elections
The London Borough of Camden is split into 20 areas called wards. Three councillors represent 15 wards, while two councillors represent Camden Square, Camden Town, Frognal, Hampstead Town and Kentish Town North due to size.

You can cast two or three votes depending on the number of councillors representing your ward. Follow the instructions on the top of your ballot paper to vote.

Polling stations
Polls open between 7am and 10pm on polling day. As long as you are in the polling station queue by 10pm, you will still be allowed to vote. Find your polling station at wheredoivote.co.uk or on your poll card.

• The polling station at Acol Bridge Club for the South Hampstead ward has moved to St James' Church Hall, 2 Sherriff Road, NW6 2AP

Lost poll card
You do not need your poll card to vote on polling day. As long as you registered to vote by the deadline, your name will be on the electoral register. Simply arrive at your polling station, let the staff know your name and address and show your photo ID.

Dogs in polling stations
Dogs are allowed into many of our polling stations. However, it is at the building owner’s discretion. If there is clear signage in place that states dogs are not allowed, then we ask that you respect these wishes. Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from these rules and are allowed into all polling stations.

Photo policy
We ask that you refrain from taking photos inside polling stations. This is to make sure that you do not break strict laws around the secrecy of the ballot. However, you are welcome to take photos outside our polling stations if you’re excited to share them with friends and family over social media.

Postal vote

The deadline to register to vote by post for these elections has passed. If you have registered to vote by post, your postal vote packs are being sent out.

Postal votes will only be counted if they are returned before 10pm on Thursday 7 May.

If you are concerned that your postal vote might not arrive in time, you can hand it in in person at any polling station in Camden or Camden Town Hall (Judd Street, WC1H 9JE) until 10pm on Thursday 7 May. A form will need to be completed if you hand in a postal vote. Please do not put postal votes in any of the council offices letter boxes or they will be rejected.

Eligibility

You need to be registered to vote and aged 18 or over on the day of the election. The deadline to register to vote for these elections was 11.59pm on Monday 11 August. 

Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, you can now only register to vote in local elections, including council elections, if you’re a British or Irish citizen, or you have permission to enter or stay in the UK – or you don’t need permission – and you’re a: 

• Commonwealth citizen 
• Citizen of Denmark, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal or Spain

Postal vote

If you apply to vote by post, your ballot paper will be sent to you approximately 10 days before the election, and included with your ballot will be instructions on how to vote and return the ballot back to us in time.

You can apply to vote by post on the Gov.uk website. You will need to provide your National Insurance number or other identity document, address and signature, which will be used to verify your identity. To prevent fraud, you need to provide your signature when you use your postal vote.

You can still apply for a postal vote by completing a paper application form, which you can also request by emailing electoral.services@camden.gov.uk or by calling 020 7974 4444.

Vote by proxy

If you’re going to be away from home or unable to make it to your polling station because of work or a medical issue or disability, an appointed person can vote on your behalf. This is called proxy voting. The person you choose can be a friend or a relative.

Your appointed proxy will need to cast your vote at your designated polling station and your proxy must be registered to vote and eligible to vote at the election.

You can apply for a proxy vote on the Gov.uk website. 

You will need to provide your National Insurance number or other identity document, your signature, and the address and contact details of your proxy.

Green Party candidate, Lorna Jane Russell, won the by-election and is elected Councillor for the Highgate ward.

The turnout was 33%. 

The by-election results are as follows: 

Residents will be required to present photo ID when voting in person at their Polling Station.

If you live in the Highgate ward, check that you have a form of accepted photographic ID needed to vote in person, or apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate by 5pm on Wednesday 22^nd November if you do not.

Photo ID

Residents now need to show photo ID to vote in person at elections, including in the Highgate by-election on Thursday 30^th November.

Examples of accepted forms of photo ID include:

• Passports issued in the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, British Overseas Territories, an EEA state, or a Commonwealth country
• Driver licenses issued in the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (including provisional driving licences)
• Blue Badges
• Some travel passes
• Proof of Age cards
• Other government issued documents – for example, Biometric immigration document, National identity card issued by an EEA state.

Voter Authority Certificate

A Voter Authority Certificate is a free photographic identification document specific for the purpose of voting.

You can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate if:

• You do not have an accepted form of photo ID
• You are not sure whether your photo ID still looks like you
• You are worried about using an existing form of ID for any other reason, such as the use of a gender marker

To apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate, please visit the Gov website.

The application process requires you to provide a photo of yourself, your national insurance number and date of birth.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to vote in the Highgate by-election is 5pm on Wednesday 22^nd November.

Voters who do not produce a Voter Authority Certificate or valid identification will not be able to vote at their Polling Station on polling day.

Register to vote

Polling cards are now being sent by post to all registered voters in the ward.

If you are not registered to vote, you have until midnight on Tuesday 14^th November to register to vote in the Highgate by-election.

To register please visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or call Electoral Services on 020 7974 4444.

Once you have registered to vote you can also apply for a postal vote or to vote by proxy.

Postal vote

If you apply to vote by post, your ballot paper will be sent to you ahead of the election and included with your ballot will be instructions on how to complete your vote and return it back to us in time.

To receive a postal vote, you must first complete an application form.

From the 31 October 2023 the way in which you apply for a Postal Vote will change.

You can now apply for a postal vote online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote.

You will need to provide your date of birth, signature and your National Insurance Number, which will be used to verify your identify.

You can still apply for a postal vote by post by completing a vote by post application form. You must include your date of birth, a signature and your National Insurance Number

Vote by proxy

You can appoint a proxy, which is a person who you chose to vote on your behalf at your polling station. They can be a friend or a relative

Your appointed proxy will need to cast your vote at your designated polling station and your proxy must be registered to vote and eligible to vote at the election.

Proxy voters will need to show their own photographic identification, not that of the elector they are voting on behalf of.

The presiding officer at the station will be able to help you with this on polling day.

Dogs in polling stations

Dogs are allowed into many of our polling stations as long as they are on a lead however, it is at the building owner’s discretion. If there is clear signage in place that states dogs are not allowed, then we ask that you respect these wishes. Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from these rules and allowed into all polling stations. 

Photo policy

We ask that you refrain from taking photos while inside polling stations, this is to ensure that you don’t break strict laws around the secrecy of the ballot. However, you’re more than welcome to take photos outside your polling station.

The Canvass takes places each year and is an opportunity for residents to make sure that they are on the electoral register, are able to vote, and that their details – such as their name and address – are correct and up to date.

Residents can expect to receive an Annual Canvass Form either by email or by post from 23 August 2023.

Residents will receive a green or a pink form and will simply need to follow the instructions sent to them:

• Pink form: reply as instructed on the form.
• Green form: If all your information is correct, you do not need to do anything. If your information needs updating, please go to registersecurely.com/camden or call Electoral Services on 020 7974 4444.

If you are not currently registered to vote, your name will not appear in the letter or email that we send. If you want to register to vote the easiest way to do so is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, but you will still need to respond to the form that you receive if it is pink.

The Canvass will end on 24 November 2023. Anyone registering to vote for the first time during this period will join the electoral register on 1st December 2023 when the revised register is published.

With elections taking place in Camden next year, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure that they can take part and have their say on the decisions that affect them. 

Recent home movers in particular are urged to check their details. Electoral Commission research has found that recent home movers are less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.

If you live in the South Hampstead ward, there is still time to check you have a form of accepted photographic ID needed to vote in person, or to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate if you do not.

Photographic ID

Residents will now need to show photo ID to vote in person at elections, including in the South Hampstead by-election.

Accepted forms of photo ID include:

• Passports issued in the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, British Overseas Territories, an EEA state, or a Commonwealth country
• Driver licenses issued in the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (including provisional driving licences)
• Blue Badges
• Some travel passes
• Proof of Age cards
• Other government issued documents – for example, Biometric immigration document, National identity card issued by an EEA state.

You can also use an expired photo ID as long as you are still recognisable from the photo. The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

Voter Authority Certificate

A Voter Authority Certificate is a free photographic identification document specific for the purpose of voting.

You can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate if:

• You do not have an accepted form of photo ID
• You are not sure whether your photo ID still looks like you
• You are worried about using an existing form of ID for any other reason, such as the use of a gender marker

To apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate, please visit the Gov website.

The application process requires you to provide a photo of yourself, your national insurance number and date of birth.

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to vote in the South Hampstead by-election is 5pm on Tuesday 23^rd May.

Voters who do not produce a Voter Authority Certificate, or valid identification will not be able to vote at their Polling Station on polling day.

Polling cards are now being sent by post to all registered voters in the ward, along with information about photographic ID requirements for voting in person.

If you are not registered to vote, you have until midnight on Monday 15^th May to register to vote in the South Hampstead by-election.

What if my appearance has changed on my photo ID?

If you look totally different on your ID, we recommend that you apply for Voter Authority Certificate before the deadline to prevent you from not being able to vote.

Can I use a poll card as ID?

No, it must be an approved form of photographic ID.

Can I get a Voter Authority Certificate on the day?

No, applications for Voter Authority Certificate will not be accepted after the deadline at midnight on Tuesday 23^rd May.  So that it is received in time, please completed your application as soon as possible if you need Voter Authority Certificate.

My name is different on my photo ID to the electoral register, what should I do?

If in any doubt about whether your identification will be accepted, please contact electoral.services@camden.gov.uk. 

I don’t want to risk losing my ID, can I bring a photocopy?

Whatever form of ID you bring must be the original, no copies or electronic versions will be accepted.

What if I lose my Voter Authority Certificate?

We recommend you keep your Voter Authority Certificate as safe as you would any other form of official identification. However, if this happens, please contact electoral.services@camden.gov.uk 

Can I use an expired driving licence or passport?

Yes, as long as the photo is still a good likeness.

Changes to Camden’s electoral wards and polling stations

Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission, the number of electoral wards in the borough has increased from 18 to 20.

The Council has reviewed its’ polling districts and polling stations within the new wards and has changed a small number of polling stations.

Registered voters received a letter from the Council in January 2022 confirming their voter registration, electoral ward, and their local polling station for the election on May 5^th.

This information will also be on the polling cards that are currently being sent to all registered voters.

Alternatively, you can find your local polling station at any time by visiting wheredoivote.co.uk.

Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission, all but one of the current Council wards in Camden will change.

The number of electoral wards in the borough will increase from 18 to 20 while the number of Councillors will increase from 54 to 55.

15 wards will be represented by three Councillors and five wards will be represented by two.

The Commission has made these recommendations so that all Councillors represent about the same number of residents.

Consultation on these changes took place between November 2018 and September 2019. Residents, disability groups and local stakeholders as well as Camden’s MPs, Councillors and political parties were all asked for their views.

The last electoral ward review in Camden was in 1999.

Parliament agreed the changes on October 12th, 2020 and they will formally take effect from December 1^st, 2021 when the Electoral Register is updated. The first election thereafter will be the local Council elections on May 5^th, 2022.

In preparation for the changes, the Council has undertaken a review of its polling districts and polling stations within the new wards.

Registered electors will receive a letter from the Council in January 2022 confirming their voter registration, electoral ward, polling district and local polling station.

To help you prepare for polling day on Thursday 6 May, we’ve compiled these voting tips to answer any questions you might have.

Covid-19 changes

We have made some changes to our 84 polling stations so that they are safe places to vote.

Like visiting your local shops, you will be asked to:

• Wear a face covering, unless you are exempt
• Use hand sanitiser, available at polling station entrances and exits
• Maintain social distancing

You may also choose to:

• Bring your own pencil or pen to mark your ballot. Pencils will still be available at our polling stations, which will be cleaned after each use.
• Avoid busier times when there may be queues. Some polling stations may have queues at peak times – between 7.30am and 9.30am and between 5pm and 8pm. Please visit outside of peak times if you are working from home and/or are able to.

At polling stations, you can expect many of the measures you’ve become used to in shops over recent months such as hand sanitiser, floor markings, face masks, Perspex glass and limited numbers inside.

Facemasks and face shields will be available at all polling stations.

Proxy voting

• The Mayor, for which voters have a first and second choice vote
• Greater London Assembly London wide members (11 Members)
• Greater London Assembly Constituency Members (14 members). Barnet and Camden form one constituency and will elect a constituency member.

This year's vote count will take place over 2 days to ensure social distancing measures can be in place.

Ballot Papers

Alternatively, you can choose a companion to come along to the polling station with you to help you cast your vote. The presiding officer at the station will be able to help you with this on polling day.

Dogs in polling stations

Dogs are allowed into many of our polling stations. However, it is at the building owner’s discretion. If there is clear signage in place that states dogs are not allowed, then we ask that you respect these wishes. Guide and assistance dogs are exempt from these rules and are allowed into all polling stations.

Photo policy

We ask that you refrain from taking photos inside polling stations, this is to ensure that you don’t break strict laws around the secrecy of the ballot. However, you are welcome to take photos outside our polling stations if you’re excited to share them with friends and family over social media.

Polling cards have been sent by post to all registered voters and, if you are not registered, you have until midnight on Monday 19^th April to register.

Once you have registered to vote you can also apply to vote for a postal vote or to vote by proxy.

Ahead of the elections on May 6^th, the number registered postal voters in the borough has risen by 83%, from 20,000 to 36,700 voters.

Postal vote

If you apply to vote by post, your ballot paper will be sent to you ahead of the election and included with your ballot will be instructions on how to complete your vote and return it back to us in time.

In order to receive a postal vote, you must first complete an application form.

We recently sent out a pre-populated postal vote application to all electors who normally go to a polling station.

You can also complete an application form by visiting camden.gov.uk/postal-voting or request a paper application form by emailing electoral.services@camden.gov.uk or by calling 020 7974 4444.

Postal vote applications will need to be completed and returned to us by 5pm on Tuesday 20^th April.

On your application form we will ask for your date of birth and a hand-written signature. In order to help prevent fraud, you will be required to give these details again when you use your postal vote.

Postal votes are then sent out approximately 10 days before polling day.

Vote by proxy

You can appoint a proxy, which is a person who you chose to vote on your behalf at your polling station. They can be a friend or a relative.

Your appointed proxy will need to cast your vote at your designated polling station and your proxy must be registered to vote and eligible to vote at the election.

You can complete an application form by visiting camden.gov.uk/voting-by-proxy or request a paper application form by emailing electoral.services@camden.gov.uk or by calling 020 7974 4444.

Proxy vote applications will need to be completed and returned to us by 5pm on Tuesday 27^th April.

Polling stations

We have made some changes to our 84 polling stations so that they are safe places to vote. Like visiting your local shops, you will be asked to:

• Wear a face covering, unless you are exempt
• Use hand sanitiser, available at polling station entrances and exits
• Maintain social distancing

You may also choose to:

• Bring your own pencil or pen to mark your ballot
• Avoid busier times when there may be queues

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, some of our polling stations have also changed. Your local polling station will be listed on your polling card and you can also find your polling station by visiting wheredoivote.co.uk.

The elections

There are three separate elections taking place on May 6^th:

• The Mayor, for which voters have a first and second choice vote
• Greater London Assembly London wide members (11 Members)
• Greater London Assembly Constituency Members (14 members). Barnet and Camden form one constituency and will elect a constituency member.

The canvass takes place each year and is an opportunity for residents to make sure that they are on the electoral register and that their details – such as address and name - are correct.

Residents can expect to receive a Household Enquiry Form through the post from 21 August 2020 and should follow the instructions on the form.

The canvass will end on 23 November 2020. Anyone registering to vote for the first time during this period will join the electoral register on 1st December 2020 when the revised register is published, as required by law.

With elections taking place in Camden in May 2021, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure that they can take part. If you’re not currently registered to vote, your name will not appear in the letter we send. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post.

People who have moved recently are especially encouraged to look out for the voter registration letter. Research by the Electoral Commission indicates that recent home movers are far less likely to be registered than those who have lived at the same address for a long time.

Across Great Britain, 92% of people who have been at their property for more than sixteen years will be registered, compared to 36% of people who have lived at an address for less than one year.

11.00pm: Verification continues - meanwhile the stage is set for successful candidates later this evening. 

10.25pm: Some ballot papers have already arrived at the count centre. The first phase of counting is called 'verification'. This is to count how many votes have been cast in total in each ward and to establish the turnout figure. 

10.00pm: POLLS HAVE CLOSED. Counting staff have taken their seats. Ballot boxes are being locked up ready for transportation to the count centre. Candidates are beginning to arrive at the count centre and the excitement ratchets up a notch.

9.40pm: Somers Town Community Sports Centre has seen a few election counts now - and it's got its glad rags on tonight. Polls close in 20. 

9.20pm: You'll have seen in the news today that a wide variety of venues double up as polling stations. No pubs have been swapping their barrels for ballot boxes in Camden, but we have used our first ever mobile polling station today, this is in the carpark at Beckford Primary School in Fortune Green ward. It meant the school could carry on teaching their children on polling day. Just over half an hour to cast your votes now folks!

9.00pm: Welcome to live coverage of the 'Camden Count'. Council staff will be counting votes in the Camden Council local election 2018 here at the Somers Town Community Sports Centre throughout the night. 

Residents across Camden have been going to the polls today since 7am. Polls close in one hour at 10am - at which point the ballot boxes will be locked and transported here so we can get the count underway.

The most common reasons for not achieving resolutions is lack of commitment and loss of motivation, but Camden Council has a solution: a New Year’s resolution you can achieve in just three minutes. Although not a typical resolution, putting registering to vote on your list this year will have more benefits than simply giving you a sense of achievement.

Councillor Sarah Hayward, Leader of Camden Council, said: “Registering to vote is an important part of democracy. It means you will be ready to have say on who represents you at all levels of government. With the London Mayoral and London Assembly elections coming up in May, now is a good time to make sure you’re on the electoral register and I’d encourage all Camden residents to spend 3 minutes registering or updating their details.”

The Council is also using innovative methods to get people registered including advertising on till receipts at local shops, placing large posters at bus stops and utilising social media to spread the word. 

Everyone eligible to vote needs to register themselves, including teenagers who are 17 now but will be 18 by 5 May 2016. It’s quick and easy to do at gov.uk/register-to-vote.
