Special needs strategy consultation launches

Camden Council is asking parents, carers, children, young people and professionals to have their say on a new draft strategy to improve services for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) aged 0 to 25.

The Council has today (1 July) published its Draft Local Area SEND Strategy to improve support services and the outcomes achieved by children and young people with SEND over the next five years. This has already involved a great deal of input from professionals, children and young people, parents and families.

However, the Council is now inviting people to have their say on the published draft strategy. The consultation period runs from 1 July to 22 September 2022

The draft strategy outlines the vision and key priorities for Camden’s children and young people with SEND so they can achieve well in their early years, at school and into adulthood. It puts forward a shared ambition that children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities lead happy, fulfilled and rewarding lives.

Councillor Marcus Boyland, Cabinet Member for Best Start for Children and Families

We want all children and young people with special educational needs and / or disabilities in Camden to succeed in life, from early years, to school and in adolescence, so they can lead fulfilled lives as adults. We’re proud of the work we’ve achieved so far together with schools, health organisations and the voluntary sector to support all local children and young people with SEND, but we are always looking for ways to improve our services.

We want to hear from as many children and young people with SEND, their parents / carers and professionals as possible to understand their views and experiences so we can provide the best possible support and services. The draft strategy reflects ideas and views we have already heard from parents, carers, children, young people and professionals – however, we would like more input as part of this formal consultation before finalising it. This is your chance to shape the final strategy.

However, you can also email your comments to us if you prefer.

Parents and carers are also invited to take part in an in-person workshop at 10.30am on Thursday, 22 September at Kentish Town Community Centre, 17 Busby Place, NW5 2SP. No need to pre-book - just turn up.

Please note that the above consultation is for Camden’s Local Area SEND Strategy. It is different from the SEND review: right support, right place, right time - the Government's consultation on its Green Paper which closed on 22 July.
