Share your views on Camden’s plans to tackle violence against women and girls
Camden Council is asking residents, community partners, and local businesses to have their say on a new strategy to prevent violence against women and girls in the borough.
As part of its continued commitment to making Camden a safer place for women and girls, the council is developing its first Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy for 2026 to 2029.
The strategy focuses on stopping violence and abuse before it happens by working with schools and in youth settings to raise awareness, challenge harmful attitudes, and promote healthy relationships.
The council aims to ensure earlier identification by equipping staff across services and partner organisations to spot warning signs sooner and offer timely support for survivors of all ages, while also working with the police to hold perpetrators to account and helping to change their behaviour.
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) includes sexual harassment, sexual violence, domestic abuse, exploitation, and faith or honour-based violence.
Co-developed with survivors and key community partners, the strategy takes the onus away from women and girls to change their behaviour, and more towards preventative work to ensure Camden is a safe place for women and girls to thrive, without fear of harassment or abuse.
This includes taking an evidence-based approach to identify inequalities in the borough and target support effectively. As well as deepening partnership work with the police, local schools, health colleagues, voluntary organisations, local businesses, and more to strengthen a community-wide approach to change societal attitudes and stop this behaviour.
The council worked closely with survivors, listening to their lived experiences to help develop the strategy which puts them at the heart of this work. Residents, community partners, local businesses, and visitors have until Sunday 22 March 2026 to share their views on the strategy via the consultation webpage.
Everyone deserves to feel safe at home and out in the community, however we know there is much work to be done around safety for women and girls.
Our Preventing Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy makes clear that the responsibility lies not on women to change their behaviour, but with all of us – every individual, every community, every institution to challenge the attitudes that enable abuse.
We want to break the cycle and prevent this behaviour from happening, ensuring women and girls in Camden can thrive.
Other work to tackle violence against women and girls includes Camden’s ‘Call It Out’ sexual harassment campaign, encouraging bystanders to safely take action if they witness an incident of sexual harassment or assault.
The council has also invested in new training and policies to help council housing staff recognise signs of abuse to help signpost survivors to any support they may need.
