New service launched to support LGBT+ unpaid carers
Camden LGBT+ Unpaid Carers Support (CLUCS) launched at an event at Camden Council’s town hall on 20 February and is one of the very few direct support services for LGBT+ unpaid carers’ in the UK.
Camden Council has partnered with forum+ and Alternative Care Services to provide CLUCS, a new service which will raise awareness of issues faced by LGBT+ unpaid carers and provide easily accessible advice and information to support them. The initiative represents a significant advancement in support services for unpaid LGBT+ carers.
CLUCS will also organise free social events for LGBT+ unpaid carers to meet and socialise, and facilitate monthly support meetings, which will offer a safe space to talk and share experiences.
It is estimated that 1 in 10 LGBT+ people are unpaid carers. LGBT+ carers face additional challenges, experiencing bias and discrimination whilst accessing services, as well as feelings of isolation, loneliness and loss of identity.
Camden Council recognises the invaluable role of unpaid carers in helping others to live independent and fulfilling lives in our communities. Last year, the Council launched its Carer’s Action Plan – a commitment to recognising the dedication and contributions of unpaid carers in our borough, and improving support for them.
“We want our unpaid carers to know that Camden will support them while they are supporting others.
“With the launch of CLUCS, we’re providing a safe space and an opportunity for LGBT+ unpaid carers to connect. Community is essential for LGBT+ people to thrive, but many are experiencing isolation and loneliness because of their additional caring responsibilities.
“Camden is proud to launch this service during LGBT+ History Month. We look forward to working with our partners to recognise, safeguard and celebrate Camden’s LGBT+ unpaid carers – and hope to inspire similar initiatives across the country.”
