A new accessible public space by Gordon Square in the heart of Bloomsbury
Camden in partnership with University College London (UCL) have made changes on the northern side of Gordon Square to improve the area for people who live, study and visit.
The creation of another new and accessible public space to the north of Gordon Square, in partnership with UCL, will transform this area and further add to our innovative programme of greening spaces across the borough. Once again, we are changing road space into usable and enjoyable green space for people.
These changes are part of our wider work to make streets across Camden safer and healthier. We are making this street a more attractive place to stop, rest and enjoy, as well as improving the local environment and air quality.
These changes are the first of several improvements in this area over the next five years. We will be observing how the space and surrounding area is used and then may look to develop it in the future.

Being an urban university - these outdoor spaces are even more precious - providing a place to reflect and be in a setting closer to nature.”
Improvements to the street include:
- Closing the road in front of the Institute of Archaeology to traffic, except cycling, using planters between Gordon Street and Taviton Street.
- Adding a two-way cycle lane for safe and easy cycling through the area and to UCL
- Creating a new space for people to enjoy with plants, seating and some bike parking, including an area for small exhibitions.
- Biodiverse planting, sustainable furniture that incorporates habitats for pollinating insects.
