Mayor recognises Camden’s Irish links through Dublin visit
Councillor Samata Khatoon is visiting Dublin in recognition of Camden’s strong links with Ireland and Camden’s Irish communities’ contributions to the borough.
Cllr Khatoon will meet with the Lord Mayor of Dublin and councillors from Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council during her visit between 16-20 September.
As part of her visit, the Mayor will also learn about how Dublin is tackling youth homelessness in the city and the arts and cultural projects offered to young people. These subjects relate to the Mayor’s chosen charities – New Horizon Youth Centre and Scene & Heard. The Mayor will also visit Dublin’s Islamic Cultural Centre.
Camden has really strong and proud Irish links. I am looking forward to visiting Dublin and building connections with representatives and communities there.
Camden’s strong Irish community has helped shaped the borough we know today. During the industrial revolution, many Irish people moved to Camden to work on the railways connecting London to the Midlands and beyond. They also worked as dock labourers, shoemakers, tailors, and more, mostly living in what was known as ‘Agar Town’ in St Pancras. The community built strong roots in Camden, and many famous Irish bars in the area remain open from this time.
Today many of Camden’s population are Irish or have Irish ancestry and the London Irish Centre continues to work to empower and enrich lives through community programmes, events, and activities.
