Leader message to communities: Manchester synagogue attack

Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, with a message for communities following the attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester.  

Councillor Richard Olszewski, Leader of Camden Council, said: “I am reaching out to all of our residents, and particularly our Jewish residents, following today’s terrible attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester. This attack has caused terror on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. My thoughts are with the loved ones of those killed and with everyone affected.

“Our Jewish residents have been marking Yom Kippur today - their safety and reassurance is our priority. Our community safety officers, together with the police, are both stationed outside of all of Camden’s synagogues and are patrolling in the immediate neighbourhoods around them. We have contacted Jewish community groups to ensure they know that they have our support.

“If you see or hear anything which could be a hate crime – whether that be criminal damage, graffiti, or written and spoken threats or slurs – we want to hear about it so we can take action. We will not stand for actions which make people feel unsafe, threatened or discriminated against, so please do report it.

“I will be visiting synagogues in Camden and meeting with community leaders and residents in the coming days. I know that our communities will stand together in the face of this terror.

“We will not allow anyone to divide us, or to stop people from all races and religions going about their daily lives. We will support everyone in our diverse communities and I urge anyone who is fearful or has concerns to get in touch.”
