HS2: Select committee update - a guide for petitioners

If you petitioned on the HS2 bill and intend to speak before select committee, you will want to be prepared.

We expect that Camden petitioners will be called to speak before the select committee in late 2015 and we will be providing advice on the process as the year progresses. For now, here’s some things you can do now to get ready:

Advice from the select committee

If you are intending to include sensitive or confidential information in your presentation, you can write to the committee rather than to read this out in a public session.

However, if the information is significant to the Government and HS2 Ltd. the committee may need to take a different approach. They would only share the information with the Government and HS2 Ltd. with your permission.

The committee do not need to hear the case repeated on the World Health Organisation noise guidelines. They will consider noise as a route-wide issue at a later stage - when local councils present their case - and the guidelines may be relevant then.

Select committee timescales

The HS2 select committee intends to continue sitting until 23 March, ahead of Parliament dissolving on 30 March.

After the general election, we understand the committee wishes to recommence its sittings promptly. Motions have already been passed by the Commons, allowing the Bill to be ‘revived’ in the new Parliament.

More information

Camden Council opposes plans for HS2 as currently proposed. If the government does go ahead with the scheme, Camden is committed to securing the best deal for our communities. Find out more here.
