Highgate Newtown Community Centre wins first prestigious Housing Design Award
The Highgate Newtown Community Centre is officially an award winner after securing its first-ever award for design excellence at the Housing Design Awards 2025.
Announced at a ceremony in London, the community centre led housing development won the award for its high-quality design and attention to detail given to both external facades and internal spaces.
This is the first award since the Highgate Newtown Community Centre officially opened its doors to the neighbourhood in May.
Judges praised the community centre for its ‘playful and cohesive design’ which helps to bring communities together, as well as the ‘spacious and inviting’ courtyard to ‘enhance connectivity, improve safety, and increase foot traffic to community facilities’.
The Highgate Newtown Community Centre, designed by architects RCKa and managed by Highgate Newtown Community Partners (HNCP), includes children and youth council services, including specialist mental health support and support for parents and carers, alongside a multi-use sports hall, hairdressers, laundrette and cookery school for community use.
As part of the wider development, thirty-six new family-sized council affordable homes were built in the area under Camden’s Community Investment Programme – the council’s ambitious housebuilding programme set to deliver 4,850 new homes across the borough.
This is fantastic news! Not only does this award recognise the building as state-of-the art, but also the vital role community centres have to support local residents and families feel less isolated and live healthy lives.
We are proud of this space which brings the community closer together, offering children and youth services and activities for the whole community, as well as the thirty-six homes we built as part of the wider development. Congratulations to all those involved in making this happen.
