Have your say on ice cream van licensing in Camden
Camden Council is inviting residents, businesses and interested parties to have their say on an ice cream van licensing trial that it is undertaking at five locations across the borough.
“When the sun comes out in Camden, so do the ice cream vans. These are very much part of our community landscape during the summer months and provide enjoyment for people of all ages.
“We want to work together to meet the sometimes competing needs of communities, customers and ice cream traders.
“As in other boroughs, ice cream vans do not need a licence to trade on authorised streets in Camden, provided the van does not remain in any one location for more than 15 minutes and does not return to the same location or street that day.
“This scheme will involve the issue of temporary licences to ice cream sellers for five locations in the borough. It is designed to achieve several positive outcomes, including; improved air quality and reduced emissions from engine idling through the ability to run on electric or battery; high levels of hygiene; clearly advertised pricing; the inclusion of healthier options such as frozen yogurt or fruit, and to promote safety for both ice cream sellers and residents.
“We hope to support ice cream sellers onto the scheme, for the benefit of themselves, their customers, local residents and businesses. I would encourage everyone who is interested to take part in the engagement and let us know your thoughts on our plans.”
The five sites identified for the trial are; Camden High Street (Outside JD sports), Albert Terrace (Park side); Downshire Hill junction with East Heath Road; Russell Square junction with Woburn Place and Neal Street pedestrian area (Outside Urban Outfitters).
The council will also be writing to all stakeholders in the vicinity of each location, as well as traders, representative bodies, local groups and Business Improvement Districts (BIDs).

The engagement will start on Thursday 11 July and run for a minimum of six months, with a further six months, if considered necessary, until July 2020.
