Google, Camden Council and Camden Learning partner to open AI Campus
Google, Camden Council and Camden Learning have launched the London AI Campus, with the Prime Minister stating his support for the ground-breaking initiative to improve digital skills in the UK.
The Campus, situated in Somers Town, Camden, will be home to a two-year education pilot aimed to help inspire, inform and educate sixth form students from across Camden in the field of AI. The pilot offers students access to cutting edge resources on AI and machine learning, as well as offering mentoring and industry expertise from Google DeepMind.
Students are provided with real-world projects which connect AI to diverse fields - including health, social sciences and the arts - to allow them to explore the range of local and global challenges that AI can be used to address.
The initial cohort is already underway - with the 32 students reflecting the diversity of Camden’s post-16 student body. Preference was given to applicants from underrepresented groups, including those eligible for Free School Meals.
From mid-2025, students not participating in the programme will also be able to benefit, as the Campus will operate as an ‘Opportunity Centre’ which will provide out-of-school learning and support to the broader student body to enhance their access to technology, digital and foundational AI learning.
The Campus will also upskill teachers on the topic of AI using Experience AI, a free educational programme co-developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind providing teachers with the training and resources they need to engage their students in the subject of AI.
With new funding of over £865,000 from Google.org, the Raspberry Pi Foundation is now building on the early success of the programme and partnering with Parent Zone to deliver this valuable training to teachers across the UK, with an aim of reaching over 250,000 additional students by the end of 2026.
This is part of Google’s ambition to use AI to improve people’s lives across the country - ensuring that everyone is able to seize the benefits of AI, regardless of background.
Google has already trained more than one million people and businesses across the UK in digital and AI skills, partnering with governments, trade unions, NGOs and local communities - and recently launched the AI works programme to uncover the most effective ways to accelerate the uptake of AI skills and boost productivity across the UK.
The launch of Google’s London AI Campus is a seismic moment. From faster diagnoses, to ensuring our security in a more volatile world, to driving economic growth, the possibilities AI offers in almost every area of our lives are vast.
This area of London is unique across the world. It boasts not only a huge tech presence, but has leading universities and innovative creative industries on its doorstep. And on top of that, a pipeline of world class talent through its young people. It’s one of the most exciting places in the world, and there’s huge potential for success.
So I say to the young people in Kings Cross and St Pancras: whatever your interest, whatever your talent, AI is the opportunity of the future - so get involved. Take advantage of it. My government will support you on that journey, and give you the opportunities to get on in life and build a better future.
