Free NHS Health Checks

Do you check the health of your car more than your own? Ever get the feeling that your lifestyle could be affecting your health? Are you aged 40 to 74? Why not get a free health check?

NHS health checks are offered once every five years to people aged between 40 and 74 years (or 30 to 74 if you are South Asian), to assess heart health and the risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and dementia.

By having a regular health check you stand a better chance of preventing or catching potential conditions before they become serious. The check takes about 20 to 30 minutes and includes measuring height, weight, blood pressure and checking your cholesterol with a simple blood test. You’ll be given an overall score of your risk of getting heart disease or stroke. If your results could be improved, you will be given a clear explanation of steps you can take to better your health.

Heart disease is Camden’s biggest killer, and you are at risk if you smoke, have high blood pressure, do little physical activity, or are overweight or obese. It is estimated that nearly 80% of premature deaths from heart attacks and strokes are preventable if the main lifestyle risks are changed.

A health check can detect potential problems before they do real damage and you can be referred to other services that will support you in changing your life for the better. Just 20 minutes could save your life.

If you are Camden resident, and registered with a GP, ask at your local surgery, call 0203 633 2609 / 0800 917 0976, or click on the link below to book an appointment at a place near you.
