Camden’s Mayor and cabinet member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden recently joined other residents to try out our free cycle skills courses.

Camden cycle skills teach essential bike riding skills for all ages and abilities, from beginner and intermediate group courses to open community cycling, and individual training on busy roads.

The Mayor, Councillor Samata Khatoon joined a learn to cycle session for beginners who may have never got round to learning or who need a refresher on the basics like starting, stopping and balancing on a bike.

Growing up I lacked the confidence to learn to cycle as a way to get around the borough.

The cycle training was a fun experience that showed me it's never too late to try something new. The instructors were patient, helping boost my confidence in a safe environment. I hope I can encourage others, particularly women who might feel hesitant, to start cycling as a healthy and affordable form of travel.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, a more experienced cyclist, joined a session focussed on building cycling confidence which teaches important bike control skills that prepare you for cycling safely on the road.

We hope these sessions can reduce barriers to cycling in Camden, helping more residents discover the benefits of getting around by bike, as well as trying something new for free.

The training gives people practical skills and knowledge to feel more confident on roads too, which is essential for making cycling an accessible and safe choice for daily journeys.

Our extensive cycle training programme continues to grow in popularity, with 1,514 sessions taking place last year.

Since 2017 cycling has increased amongst residents from 3.6% to 6.7% of all trips made in the borough, with currently 27km of main road segregated cycle routes across Camden.
