Council secures £6million for new hostel and homes to support people who have rough slept in Camden

Camden Council has successfully bid for £6million to expand its Housing First programme and create a new sixteen bed hostel to support those who are rough sleeping.

A new 35-property Housing First Programme – a scheme which provides people who are sleeping rough with a secure property and flexible, wrap-around support for as long as is needed - will start next Spring.

Thirty-five homes will be available for people who have experienced street homelessness in the borough, operating alongside Camden’s current Housing First Scheme.

Alongside a secure tenancy, there will be tailored and intensive 1-2-1 support to help the person sustain their tenancy, lead healthy lives, and focus on the things that matter to them, giving the tenant the right help to leave homelessness behind for good.

The thirty-five homes are made up of twenty council properties provided by Camden Council and 15 one-bedroom properties by Housing Association Notting Hill Genesis who has matched funded the grant.

This funding will go a long way in supporting some of the borough’s most vulnerable communities. Through our Housing First scheme, we want to provide people sleeping rough with a fresh start and a safe and secure place they can call home. This funding allows us to secure 20 new properties for rough sleepers, and to be able to provide specialist, wrap around support for those who move in, and I’d like to thank Notting Hill Genesis for providing an extra 15 homes for people rough sleeping in Camden.

As a borough, we are absolutely committed to addressing homelessness and ensuring those who are rough sleeping can be supported as best as possible, and I’m pleased to announce alongside this, that we will also be opening a new hostel on Gray’s Inn Road to further support people rough sleeping and provide them with the help and support needed to move into long term accommodation.

Alongside Camden increasing its Housing First scheme, a new sixteen bed hostel provided by Single Homelessness Project will open on Gray’s Inn Road later this year for those sleeping rough.

As well as accommodation, people will be provided with mental health and wellbeing support and the tools to move into longer term accommodation.

The funding was provided by the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities (DLUHC) and the Greater London Authority (GLA) as part of a national programme to end rough sleeping in the UK.

£4.5million will go towards Camden’s Housing First programme and £1.5million will be allocated to the new hostel on Gray’s Inn Road.

Camden’s outreach teams are available to provide support to anyone rough sleeping. If you are worried about someone sleeping rough in Camden, please let us know by using the Camden Streetsafe app, emailing [email protected], or calling 0808 800 0005.
