Council Leader: "There is no place for hate in Camden"

Like me, I am sure that many of you have been deeply affected by the terrible incident in Southport and the subsequent violence and intimidation seen across the country.

My thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of the bereaved, injured and all those who have since suffered.

It is understandable that many people will feel concerned about the safety of themselves and their families and friends and be anxious about a rise in tension in their communities.

I want to reassure everyone living, working or visiting Camden that their safety is our priority, that we are being vigilant and we are taking action. We are working closely with the Police, who have increased patrols in Camden, and in particular around places of worship. The Council’s Community Safety Enforcement officers have increased their patrols and we have also taken the opportunity to write to places of worship, particularly our Mosques, and community groups in the borough to reassure them on the measures being taken and remind them of how best to report any incidents or concerns.

There is no place for hate in Camden, and I am proud to live and work in a borough where people from different backgrounds live side by side as neighbours and friends. Our diversity is our strength, and we will do everything we can to ensure that every Camden resident feels reassured and safe. If you see anything that could constitute a hate crime, please report it.

  • If you have witnessed a crime or are at immediate risk of harm, please call the Police on 999.  
  • The police number for non-emergencies is 101 (24 hours) or online at https://www.met.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/  
  • You can contact Community Safety directly thorough this e-form (report antisocial behaviour) found on the website https://www.camden.gov.uk/community-safety1  
  • Call community safety via the main contact centre on 0207 974 4444 (Please go through the options until it tells you to hold, it will then take you to a submenu and Community Safety will be option 6.)

Reporting a hate crime:  

  • In an emergency you should call 999 and follow the ‘run, hide, tell’ advice. 
  • If the incident or crime isn’t an emergency, call 101 or contact your local neighbourhood police, for example by visiting your local station. 
     
  • You can also report hate crime online via report-it.org.uk
  • You can report a hate crime or incident to the Camden Safety Unit (CSU): csu.camden@met.police.uk. The CSU investigates all hate crime reports. Officers are trained to provide support to victims. 
  • You can also call the Council on 020 7974 4444. (Please go through the options until it tells you to hold, it will then take you to a submenu and Community Safety will be option 6.)  
  • We encourage anyone who witnesses or experiences this behaviour to report it. Even if you don’t report a hate incident when it happens, please do report it.
