Council Leader backs Three Lions ahead of Euro Final

Ahead of the Euro 2020 final this Sunday Cllr Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council, reflects on the belief and optimism felt by the nation as England look forward to a historic final against Italy.

Councillor Georgia Gould, Leader of Camden Council
Many of us will be excited to watch the Euro 2020 final this weekend. After some difficult times in recent years, when England step out at Wembley on Sunday we’ll be united behind them. This team are rooted in our communities and proud to stand up for all of us by taking the knee in protest at racial injustice and inequality.

Raheem Sterling may be the boy from Brent and Harry Kane might be from East London but when we watch them play we see our friends and our neighbours in Camden and all over the country.

When they re-recorded Three Lions in 1998 after the crushing disappointment of Euro 96 it started “we still believe”. In a year that has tested us to our limits, and many have suffered terribly, we still believe that good times are ahead. I’m so grateful to this team for making that a reality and I’m looking forward to cheering for them on Sunday.

Of course, we haven’t yet beaten COVID-19 and if you’re planning on watching the match at home or in one of the borough’s many venues this weekend, please remember to do so safely. COVID-19 cases are still rising rapidly in Camden and across London, so it’s really important to continue to follow public health advice.

Alongside ‘hands, face and space’, try to meet up with friends and loved ones outdoors, or make sure to let fresh air in if you’re indoors with a group. If you’re watching the game in a venue, always follow the rules set out by the venue you’re visiting. Free rapid tests are available before Sunday to make sure you don’t have Covid-19 and there are many opportunities to get your 1st or 2nd vaccination.

Thank you for keeping Camden safe by celebrating safely this weekend, and good luck to Gareth and the team. Football's coming home!
