Camden Council hits milestone in new homes target

In Camden we have now built more than 1,500 homes through our Community Investment Programme (CIP).

Nearly a third of the 4,850 homes we set out to deliver through CIP are now complete, marking a significant step forward in our mission to reduce our housing waiting lists and tackle the housing crisis.

Figures released in the CIP Annual Report for 2023 revealed that Camden’s flagship housebuilding programme has built 1,520 homes to date including 628 social rent homes, 153 specialist accommodation units, 195 temporary accommodation units and 131 intermediate rent units – meaning Camden has delivered 1,107 genuinely affordable new homes.

This includes developments such as the Maitland Park Estate, finished in July, and Highgate Newtown, where Camden bought back private sale units to house 36 Afghan refugee households previously living in bridging hotels in the borough, demonstrating the programme’s flexibility and ability to respond swiftly to changing community needs.

This is a massive achievement – providing new homes and expanding our housing stock despite Government cuts to funding and uncertainty in the economic outlook.

Not only has our Community Investment Programme shown to be successful in building new homes, but it has also allowed us to put residents at the heart of developing new housing, giving them a say in what we should make a priority for new homes in Camden.

Increased construction and borrowing costs have led to a slowdown in the national construction sector, and Camden is not immune from this – rising costs mean it is more challenging than ever to build new homes, particularly genuinely affordable homes. We want to be building even more, and faster, but like all local councils that build, we need backing from government, with funding that meets the costs of delivering new affordable homes.

Currently, 485 homes are being built across the borough by Camden Council, including 179 social rent homes. This is part of the approved pipeline of more than 1,000 homes that will allow people to live and thrive in Camden at a time when many families are being priced out of the borough.
