Camden’s new Youth MP and Deputy Youth MPs elected

Zarin Bakhshzaad has been elected as Camden’s new Youth MP in a boroughwide election which took place in schools and youth centres.

Zarin, 17, a former La Sainte Union Catholic School student who is now studying for her A-levels at South Hampstead High School Sixth Form, received 962 votes out of a total 4,818 votes cast – about 20 per cent of the vote.

Meanwhile, Niesha Akyeampong, 14, and Harvey O'Brien, 13, have been elected as the borough’s new Deputy Youth MPs. Niesha is a student at Maria Fidelis Catholic School and Harvey attends Acland Burghley School.

The three young people will serve a two-year term of office.

Young people went to the polls in schools and youth centres from 15 to 26 April in the Camden Youth MP Election 2024. There were 10 candidates. The results of the ballot were announced by outgoing Youth MPs Samir Qurashi and Aya Elgool at Camden Town Hall on Thursday 9 May.

Cllr Sabrina Francis, The Mayor of Camden, Cllr Nazma Rahman, and Cllr Marcus Boyland, Cabinet Member for Best Start for Children and Families, were all there to congratulate the young people.

The borough's Youth MP and Deputy Youth MPs are the voice for Camden young people over their two-year term, seeking to put forward their interests in local decision-making, as well as representing the views and interests of local young people at regional and national level.
