Camden wins awards for innovative public realm and active and inclusive travel schemes

Camden has recently won a series of awards for Alfred Place Gardens, Camden’s newest park, as well as London Cycling Campaign’s Active and Inclusive Travel award for the council’s continuing roll out of cycling and other related schemes.

Alfred Place Gardens won the Public Space category award in the New London Architecture Awards. These awards recognise the very best new projects across all sectors in London which make positive contributions to their surroundings.

Formerly a quiet underused road next to the bustling Tottenham Court Road, Alfred Place was transformed as part of the biggest council-led public realm and transport scheme the borough has ever seen. The West End Project is addressing traffic congestion, road safety, poor air quality and limited access to open space and nature in this area.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet member for a Sustainable Camden

“The Active and Inclusive Travel award serves to highlight the extensive ongoing work that we are undertaking across the borough to ensure that Camden is more accessible, safer, and pleasant for both cyclists and pedestrians to travel for work or pleasure.

“Camden's Safe and Healthy Streets bring big benefits for residents' quality of life in Camden - by keeping more people safe from road danger, reducing air pollution, and cutting carbon emissions.

“In Camden, more than two-thirds of people do not have a car, and already more than 8 in 10 trips made by Camden residents are made by public transport, walking and cycling. But we know this can rise further if we make our streets as safe and as welcoming as possible.”

London Cycling Campaign also awarded the council for its ongoing work to create and install schemes including Healthy School Streets, work to improve safety at junctions and increasing the provision of cycle tracks.

These awards follow hard on the heels of the council’s contractors Idverde winning a BALI award in the Hard Landscaping Construction over £500,000 category for Alfred Place Gardens and the recent award successes earlier this year where Alfred Place Gardens was a winner in the Transport Planners Society Awards and shortlisted in the Dezeen Awards.

Other green space investment delivered through the West End Project, include the rejuvenated Whitfield Gardens and the pocket parks at Capper Street and Bedford Avenue, where road junctions have been turned into small green spaces for people to enjoy and Princes Circus, currently under construction.
