Camden welcomes new powers to address poorly parked hire bikes
Camden Council welcomes the proposal of new powers for transport authorities to help regulate e-bikes set out in the Government’s English Devolution White Paper published yesterday (Monday 16 December).
The new powers mean Local Transport Authorities will be able to regulate on-street micromobility schemes, such as hire bikes and e-scooters. This will help address the issue of badly parked cycles and e-cycles which block pavements for pedestrians.
Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Planning and a Sustainable Camden, responded to this news:
We know many of our residents rely on using dockless bikes to travel across London - they are a quick, healthy and sustainable way to travel. However, these benefits are being overshadowed by incidents where they are left strewn around the streets, blocking paths for pedestrians. It is vital that our streets remain safe and accessible for all.
Camden led the way in rolling out dedicated bays for parking for hire e-bikes and e-scooters. But it is vital to give councils proper powers to regulate micromobility schemes. Camden Council and London Councils have long requested the Government to bring in these powers and we are delighted this is finally happening.
