Camden marks Holocaust Memorial Day with event in partnership with the National Holocaust Centre

Last night, (30 January) Camden Council, in partnership with the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, hosted a special event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

The event, which took place at the Town Hall’s new community space on Judd Street, brought together representatives from the Jewish Museum, JW3 and the Wiener Library as well as faith leaders, the Mayor of Camden, councillors, and Youth MPs to remember all those who have lost their lives to genocide around the world.

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Georgia Gould, opened the event to speak about this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day theme; ‘Ordinary People’.

Holocaust survivor Agnes Kaposi spoke about their experiences growing up in a Hungarian-Jewish family in the 1930’s. Mark Rusling, director of learning of the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, also chaired a live Q&A.

Councillor Nasim Ali OBE, the Mayor of Camden

This was a special event to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day and give us the chance to reflect and remember the millions of victims and survivors of the Holocaust and genocides around the world. Thank you to everyone who joined and those who shared their powerful stories.

Councillor Nasim Ali OBE, the Mayor of Camden

The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘ordinary people’ to highlight the ordinary people who let genocide happen, the ordinary people who actively perpetrated genocide, and the ordinary people who were persecuted.

The theme aims to encourage people to consider how ordinary people can play a bigger part in challenging prejudice today.
