Camden gets green light to build 16 new council homes as part of Small Sites Programme

Camden Council’s planning committee resolved to grant planning permission for 16 new council homes in Camden Town.

These new homes are set to be built under Camden’s New Homes for Small Sites Programme aimed at building more affordable homes on underused council-owned land.

Built on a former disused car park on Hadley Street, the homes will be a mix of flats and maisonettes across two buildings. The development will comprise of a range of housing sizes to support local residents and families, including 7 one-bed properties, two of which are fully wheelchair accessible, as well as 3 two-bed, 5 three-bed, and 1 four-bed family-sized home.

The planning permission includes improvements to the local area, including installing better lighting and a new green courtyard with planting, herb gardens and secure storage for residents.

In Camden, we are doing everything we can to build more council homes to help ease housing pressures and support the thousands of people on our housing waitlist. As part of this, our New Homes for Small Sites Programme aims to work with our communities to find under-used council land which could be used for affordable council housing.

This development on Hadley Street is another step in our work to build a new generation of council homes. Alongside these 16 new council homes, we are delivering estate improvements asked for by the community, enhancing the local area and helping our residents thrive both now and in the future.

Camden’s New Homes for Small Sites programme

The Council consulted with residents who know their estates best on opportunities for building new homes on council owned land – from disused spaces, car parks and garages that could be used more effectively. Residents had their say on where new homes could be built through a ‘call for ideas’ interactive map.

Camden’s New Homes for Small Sites programme was an expansion of the Community Investment Programme (CIP) – the Council’s ambitious plan to build 4,850 new homes, including 1,800 for social rent. So far, CIP has delivered 1,780 homes, 70 per cent of which are affordable. CIP has delivered some of the most energy efficient homes in the UK – helping residents cut their fuel bills and carbon emissions.
