Camden develops innovative Green Mobility Hubs in Somers Town

Camden Council is developing seven new Green Mobility Hubs in Somers Town with support from the Mayor of London’s Future Neighbourhoods 2030 fund.

A Green Mobility Hub is an easy-to-spot location where people can pick from a choice of shared dockless bikes, cargo bikes, e-scooters and car clubs.

Green Mobility Hubs can also include other community features such as cycle parking, seating, green planting, play areas, or water fountains.

The new hubs will be located on streets between Euston and St Pancras stations.

We have consulted on the first two phases of the scheme and have approved the development of five hub locations in Somers Town: Goldington Crescent, Cranleigh Street, Charrington Street, Doric Way and Chalton Street. This included making amendments to the proposed designs in response to feedback received from the consultation and taking into account our relevant policies, feedback and monitoring data.

Councillor Harrison continued: “73% of households in the Somers Town area do not own a car and rely on walking, cycling and public transport to make their journeys.

“Work on the approved hubs, some of the first in the country, will start later this year and we have now launched the consultation for the final phase of the scheme, for sites on Brill Place and Werrington Street, which is open until Sunday 4 August.

“I would urge everyone to take the time to respond. The approved phase one and two Somers Town Green Mobility Hubs will include (subject to the detailed design development):

Goldington Crescent

• Improved e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• Space for a new shared e-cargo bike.
• New electric car club vehicle and public electric vehicle charging bay.
• New resident bike hangars.
• New cycle stands for bike parking.
• Increased planting and rain garden features.
• Improve crossing points and accessibility into the park with a new dropped kerb.

Cranleigh Street

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• New car club vehicle.
• New resident bike hangars.
• New cycle stands for bike parking including accessible stands designed for cargo bikes and adapted bikes.
• Increased planting and rain garden features including area for community planting and gardening.
• Improved crossing points on Cranleigh Street and a new zebra crossing on Eversholt Street.

Doric Way

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• New car club vehicle.
• New cycle stands for bike parking.
• New resident bike hangars.
• Increased planting and rain garden features.
• A new cycle lane and cyclist protection at the junction with Euston Road.
• Changing the uncontrolled crossing on Doric Way, to a raised zebra crossing.
• A new continuous crossing at the junction of Doric Way and Eversholt Street.

Chalton Street

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• Space for a new shared e-cargo bike.
• New cycle stands for bike parking.
• New resident bike hangar.
• Adding seating, planting and rain garden features.

Charrington Street

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• Space for a new shared e-cargo bike.
• New cycle stands for bike parking including accessible stands designed for cargo bikes and adapted bikes.
• New resident bike hangars.
• Adding seating, planting and rain garden features.

The phase three Somers Town Green Mobility Hubs, which we are currently consulting on, could include (subject to the detailed design development):

Werrington Street

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• A new electric vehicle charging point for an electric Car Club and a public electric vehicle charging bay.
• New resident bike hangars.
• New cycle stands for bike parking including accessible stands designed for children.
• Adding seating, planting and rain garden features.

Brill Place

• New e-scooter and cycle hire bay.
• Space for a new shared e-cargo bike.
• A new electric vehicle charging bay.
• New resident bike hangars.
• New cycle stands for bike parking including accessible stands
• Adding seating, planting and rain garden features.
