Camden celebrates Windrush Day 2024

Next month, Camden is marking the anniversary of the arrival of HMS Windrush into Britain, with public activities and events open to all.

As part of the Windrush Day celebrations, the Annual Pitt Lecture is taking place at the British Library with a keynote speech from high profile poet, playwriter and broadcaster Lemn Sissay OBE followed by a conversation with Black Curriculum Director Lavinya Stennett

The Homecoming celebrations are also back this year to showcase the borough’s Caribbean heritage. Headlined by Omar, the event will feature an amazing line up of live music performances from established and emerging homegrown talent as well as carnival and sports workshops and a cultural marketplace.

Camden will be raising the Windrush flag again this year to honour and recognise the contributions of the Windrush generation in the borough and across the UK.

Our aim this year is to bring Camden’s community together for Windrush 2024. Our borough is home to a generation of Windrush children, innovators, creatives, artists and musicians who have all influenced the face of Britain today, and this gives us the chance to celebrate these contributions and explore the rich diverse history of Camden.

Back by popular demand, celebrations include the Annual Pitt Lecture and the Windrush Day homecoming event, and I would encourage all our residents to come along and learn about the history of the Windrush generation.

More information on the events taking place in June 2024:

  • The Annual Pitt Lecture on Monday 17 June from 7-9pm at the British Library. Lord David Pitt was a prolific campaigner. He was a GP, an MP and a grassroots activist. The scope of his legacy has impacted and transformed activism, health and social inequality and politics. In 2023, Camden launched the Pitt Lecture in recognition of Lord David Pitt’s significant contribution to politics, health and activism around racial and health inequalities.
  • Homecoming celebrations on Saturday 22 June from 12-7pm at Talacre Town Green. This one-day free event will celebrate the boroughs Windrush story and showcase Camden’s Caribbean heritage, culture and communities. The event is taking place on Talacre Town Green which has strong links to local Windrush Pioneers. The area was transformed by campaigner Jerry Williams, who was part of the Windrush Generation and Camden’s first Black mayor, from a bomb site into a space for the community to enjoy.
