Camden celebrates Borough of Sanctuary award
Camden Council has been awarded Borough of Sanctuary status, celebrating its long and proud history of welcoming and supporting refugees.
The accreditation also marks Camden becoming part of the City of Sanctuary Network, joining local authorities across the UK working to ensure services are refugee-facing and creating a culture of welcome and compassion for displaced people.
In recent years in Camden this has included resettling over 250 refugees from Afghanistan and integrating them into the community. Since March 2022, Camden’s residents have hosted around 1,000 Ukrainian refugees, and dedicated council services are supporting them to move into their own accommodation.
In celebration of its refugee communities, Camden is hosting a week of activities from 22 – 28 July 2024. Events range from art exhibitions to children’s yoga sessions, highlighting the journeys of many refugees in Camden and their valuable contributions to our society.
We’re proud to be a Borough of Sanctuary. Our borough is more vibrant and improved thanks to the refugees we have welcomed over many decades and the strong community response this inspires.
“That’s why we’re hosting a week of activities to share refugee experiences and how they have become part of our Camden story. From storytelling events, to painting workshops, and powerful exhibitions – there is something for everyone and it provides an opportunity for our communities to come together.
“We will continue to work with our communities and voluntary organisations to be a place of sanctuary for those seeking safety and a better life, today and for many years to come.
