Camden approves 500 new borough Electric Vehicle lamp post charge points
Camden Council’s cabinet has approved the joint procurement of at least 500 Electric Vehicle lamp post charge points (EVCPs) as part of the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure programme (LEVI) managed by the Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV).
These new chargers will add to the over 550 existing Electric Vehicle chargers in the borough.
As an integral part of our work to tackle the climate emergency, we have committed to reduce and mitigate the impact of transport-based emissions on a Borough wide, regional and national level.
Residents and businesses with an essential need for a motor vehicle are encouraged to switch to driving electric vehicles as they have zero tail pipe emissions. To help with this, we have made it our priority to increase the availability and number of kerbside EV charge points for residents and businesses who do not have access to a private charge point.
This procurement will see at least 500 new lamp post charge points added to our existing Electric Vehicle charging infrastructure, meaning there will be over 1,000 council electrical vehicle charging points, of various types, across the borough. Their suitability for the natural pattern of overnight parking and charging will see them primarily installed in resident parking bays across Camden, at no capital cost to the council.
Together with Islington Council, Camden has been provisionally assigned Government LEVI funding of over £0.9m to each borough. In Camden this will be used to install a minimum of 500 lamp column charge points. The remaining cost for the installations will be provided by the charge point operator successfully appointed following a bidding exercise. The successful company will supply, install, maintain and operate the charge points.
Councillor Rowena Champion, Islington’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport, said:
"In Islington, we’re determined to make tackle climate change and make the borough cleaner and healthier.
“Islington council has delivered more than 600 publicly accessible charge points and has plans to deliver more in the coming months and years. By making sure we have the infrastructure in place for electric vehicles, we can encourage drivers to make the switch to more environmentally friendly forms of transport, which helps improve air quality across the borough and delivers a huge range of health and wellbeing benefits including a lower risk of developing respiratory illness. Electric vehicles are also cheaper to run than diesel-alternatives.
“By working together with Camden council, we have successfully secured funding from OZEV that is available between 2026 and 2030 and that will provide a significant boost to our works. This funding will contribute to more than 800 additional charge points in Islington to help our residents to continue our green transition to support healthier, greener streets."
Councillor Harrison continued:
“As well as operating the charge points, the appointed operator will be required to become an integral part of both boroughs by providing apprenticeships to Camden and Islington residents, organising skills workshops, supporting our local environmental agenda and become a member of the Camden Climate alliance.”
It is anticipated that the successful operator will be appointed and commence preparatory works in Summer 2026.
