Camden agrees measures to assist car clubs in the borough
Camden Council has agreed a series of measures to encourage and assist the growth of car clubs, a service that enables members to access vehicles on a short-term basis without owning a private car, in the borough.
We know that car clubs are a popular option for our residents who don’t own their own vehicle, but occasionally need the flexibility that one can provide, while also offering a practical alternative to car ownership.
They also support our Transport Strategy aims of investing in more environmentally friendly, healthier forms of travel, creating more welcoming streets and neighbourhoods and reducing car ownership.
Following the withdrawal of Zipcar from the UK market, we have therefore agreed a number of temporary measures to support the continuation and expansion of return to bay car club services in Camden to support our residents and make best use of our valuable kerbside space.
The measures agreed are:
- Offering a two-year waiver on parking permit fees for car club operators deploying vehicles at new car club locations, including non-electric vehicles.
- Adopting a standard Memorandum of Understanding that sets out the basis on which car club operators are permitted to operate.
- For residents who are members of our Permit2CarClub scheme, we will remove any restrictions applied to their council parking accounts that previously prevented them for applying for a residential parking permit due to scheme participation.
