Camden 50 Finale
On Monday 30 November, the Town Hall opened its doors to the public for a final event to mark the end of eight months of celebrations for Camden’s 50th anniversary.
Visitors came along to the civic rooms to take a look back at many of the projects that made the birthday commemorations such a success. Walls on Walls artist Laurie Nouchka was on hand to talk through the audiovisual installations which she and her artist partner Tullis Rennie co-created and installed with the help of residents across three Camden estates.
Dmitri Galitzine’s ReStage exhibition was shown on screen, and the Demo Press zines created by Ladies of the Press* were available. Artist Elly Clarke presented the photographs and videos she created as part of her Camden Encounters series, featuring portraits including Director for the Somali Cultural Centre Ubah Egal, Belsize Stationers shop owner Arvid Mistry, and resident Mary Allen, who has been involved with the London Irish Centre in Camden for over 50 years.
The Camden Tour Guides Association were also at the event to discuss the borough’s rich history of democracy, and led a free walking tour. The winning entries from the 50photos competition in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery were on display, and will remain on show at the Town Hall for the next six months.
In the evening there was an event for people who have made a significant contribution to civic life in the borough, which included speeches by the Mayor, former MP Frank Dobson, Leader of the Council Sarah Hayward and former Leaders of the Council Martin Morton and Keith Moffitt.
It’s been a fantastic year, with many people joining in the Camden 50 celebrations since the programme launched in April this year. Here’s to the next 50 years of the wonderful borough of Camden.
