Video to inspire Camden residents to back borough's culture bid

Using a video from two young filmmakers as inspiration, Camden residents are being urged to also tell of their passion for their area and in turn back the borough’s bid to be crowned London Borough of Culture*.

The film, by directing duo James & James - comprising of film makers James Coyle and Jamie McCormack, depicts their homage to Camden.

Accompanied by a short spoken-word piece from Jamie, and music from local composer James Preston, the video taps into their experience of both growing up in and being an adult in Camden. And all the people featured have at least one common theme that unites them – being in Camden.

Camden Council is working in partnership with many of the borough’s unique cultural venues to also unite and develop a strong bid that showcases Camden’s unique culture and diverse communities, which could unlock £1.1 million in cultural funding for the area.

And the council is also calling on residents and community organisations to make contributions to the bid.

Jonathan Simpson, the council’s Cabinet Member for Culture and the Voluntary Sector, said:

“Culture is good for communities and good for business. As London Borough of Culture we would be able to build even stronger partnerships across the borough and encourage more of our residents and visitors to get involved in everything Camden has to offer.

“The key to winning the title and the funding will be the support and passion of our residents, communities and cultural venues.

“Much like the excellent video produced by James & James, we want to hear what‘Camden Is’ to you – what Camden cultural activity do you love? How does culture play a part in your community? And why do you feel, like we do, that Camden is the cultural capital of London?”

Councillor Simpson added:

“We take great pride in supporting all cultural and community activities across the borough. Our Annual Programme, is a great example of this – we are making sure all our residents can come together and enjoy all that Camden has to offer during the summer months. If Camden were successful in its bid, this would vastly increase our ability to stage quality activities that people would want to attend, across the spectrum.”
