Sport and physical activity NVQ courses starting in September

Are you 16 to 19 years old and interested in opportunities in the sport and physical activity field?

We have a programme of sport and physical activity education and training with new courses starting in September 2015.

Run by our Sport and Physical Activity Service and LaSwap sixth form consortium, the programme consists of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) levels one to three in sport and physical activity. The courses on offer include sport and physical activity leadership, National Governing Body coaching qualifications, work skills level one and two, functional skills in numeracy and literacy and GCSE Maths and English.

Kacy Richards recently completed a level three in sports development and higher sports leadership course, having originally enrolled on an NVQ level one sport and active leisure course back in 2012. After more than 100 hours volunteering as a multi-sports coach with our Sport and Physical Activity Service and gaining qualifications, he was successful in his first application for a job leading sports camps and school sports coaching.

Kacy said: “I want to be a PE teacher, so you gain a lot of experience and also coaching badges, like handball and basketball. It’s a good course to do if you’re someone that likes being around kids and loves to coach.”

Emily Byrne recently completed a level three certificate in sports development course. She said: “I think any young person that is in Year 11 and wants to go into sport should definitely do it as it brings out your confidence.”

The programme can lead to a variety of interesting roles in the sports field. Previous students have secured employment as school PE co-ordinators, teaching assistants, play workers, lifeguards, leisure assistants plus seasonal sports instructors for holiday companies.

Interviews for the NVQ programme will take place from Tuesday 25 August to Friday 28 August 2015 at Talacre Community Sports Centre and LaSwap sixth form.
