Have your say on proposed road changes between Torrington Place and Tavistock Place

Camden Council is seeking your views on proposed changes to the Torrington Place and Tavistock Place corridor.

The consultation will gather views as to whether the flow of motor vehicle traffic should be reversed to westbound or whether it should remain eastbound as it is currently.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Improving Camden's Environment
Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Improving Camden's Environment said:

“In light of the recommendation of the independent inspector, we are now consulting the public and seeking their views as to whether we should change the direction of motor traffic to westbound or keep the motor vehicle traffic flow eastbound, as it currently is.

“To assist people in making an informed decision, we have undertaken detailed traffic modelling and set out the impacts of both the westbound and eastbound options in our consultation materials.

“I would encourage everyone who is interested in this scheme to take the opportunity to have their say and let us know their opinions.

“The consultation responses together with a range of other information will be presented to Cabinet for consideration, which is expected to be in April 2019.”

In both options, it is proposed that the current two, one-way cycle lanes will be retained. We are also seeking your views on other changes to the corridor, such as potential footway widening, changes to the type of cycle lane and/or amendments to loading provisions on side streets.

The consultation can be viewed and completed online on the council’s website at: www.camden.gov.uk/torringtontavistock or printed copies of the material are available at one of our consultation exhibitions.

This consultation follows the implementation of the eastbound option under an experimental traffic trial in 2015 and the subsequent public inquiry in 2017 that further examined the merits of the scheme.

The independent Inspector agreed that this was a ‘finely balanced’ matter, and recognised the benefits brought about by the provision for separate westbound and eastbound cycle lanes. He recommended that the Council should consider changing the direction of motor traffic to westbound.

You can also request a hard copy of the consultation by emailing: [email protected] or phoning: 020 7974 6516.

The council have also scheduled three public exhibitions where you are invited to come along and discuss the project with council officers. These will be held on:

  • Thursday 29 November, 8.30am to 12.30pm at YMCA at ONE KX, 120 Cromer Street
  • Wednesday 5 December, 1pm – 5pm at the Lumen Church, 88 Tavistock Place
  • Tuesday 11 December, 4pm – 8pm at YMCA at ONE KX, 120 Cromer Street.

The consultation can be viewed and completed online on the council’s website at: www.camden.gov.uk/torringtontavistock

The deadline to respond to the consultation is Monday 24 December 2018.
