Fresh produce back at Chalton Street market

Chalton Street market’s first stall selling fruit and vegetables for several years started trading today.

The stallholder is Troy Baptiste, who has lots of experience in running market stalls locally. Troy said:

“I’ve been running market stalls for years, in fact it’s in my family because my mum is a market trader too. I’m very excited about this stall, which was co-designed by local people. We want to benefit the community by providing somewhere nearby where they can buy fresh fruit and veg at low prices. We're also involving local people in running the stall and giving them the opportunity to get experience, and maybe develop ideas of their own. We're hoping people of all ages, young people, students and older people will join in.”

Joned Khan, manager of The Living Centre, said:

"Chalton Street Market has been part of the fabric of Somers Town for over 100 years. It is home to an ambitious, engaged and diverse community – a community that want their local market to succeed, grow and have accessible, affordable and good quality fresh produce. Through the people’s fruit and veg stall project we hope to deliver what the community have said they would like.

“This has been a collaborative project with local residents, various organisations and businesses who all have contributed to make this happen, including Central Saint Martins college, New Horizon Youth Centre, Big Local, the British Library and Camden’s public health and markets teams.”

The stall will be at the market on Fridays initially, between 10am and 4pm the first day then 10am and 3pm after that. It’s a new project, developed by St Pancras and Somers Town Community Association. It has been developed with support from the Camden Can Innovation Fund, which aims to improve the health of people in Camden by making it easier for them to eat healthily and move about more.
