Celebrating 50 years of the Borough of Camden

Fifty years ago The Beatles were riding high in the charts, the BT Tower, formerly known as the Post Office Tower, was opened and the London Borough of Camden was formed.

The local authority was created by bringing together the three smaller boroughs of Holborn, St Pancras and Hampstead to form a new and vibrant local authority.

On Wednesday 1 April, representatives of all parties on Camden Council joined the Mayor of Camden, Cllr Lazzaro Pietragnoli and Council Leader Cllr Sarah Hayward at the Town Hall to mark this golden anniversary.

We’ve organised a special programme of arts activities and community events on the theme of 50 years of democracy, innovation and radical thinking in Camden as part of the anniversary.

We’ve commissioned eight artists to develop special commemorative projects that invite residents to discover and celebrate fifty years of Camden.

Running from April through to November, highlights include an exhibition at Swiss Cottage Gallery by local artist Dmitri Galitzine that looks back at Camden’s rich history of radical theatre.

Artist Elly Clarke will be speaking with Camden residents about places in the borough that they have a special connection with or a specific memory.

Artist duo, Walls on Walls, will be working with communities from five local housing estates to explore their rich and evolving identity in a collaborative audio-visual project while performance art duo Ladies of the Press* will be celebrating the women of Camden over the last 50 years with a mobile printing press.

The programme of events will be supported by a film series at partner organisation The Hospital Club, while the Camden Tour Guides are creating brand new walking tours to complement each aspect of the upcoming events.
