Camden’s Black History Month to mark Windrush migration

Camden’s month long celebration of the achievements and contributions of black people in the UK will include a special focus on the Windrush generation.

Camden Black Worker’s Group, supported by Camden Council and UNISON, will hold a free event on Friday 19 October to mark the 70th anniversary of Windrush called ‘Inspiring the young generation’.

The event will ask what we can learn from the generation invited from the Caribbean to help rebuild the United Kingdom after the Second World War. It will feature contributions from writers and musicians - including Michael de Souza, author and creator of the books and television series Rastamouse.

A full list of events taking place in Camden to mark Black History Month are on our Love Camden website.

Councillor Abdul Hai, Cabinet Member for Young People and Cohesion at Camden Council, said: “This year has seen the appalling treatment of the Windrush generation laid bare – and if there’s one thing this teaches us, it’s that the achievements and contributions of our black citizens must continue to be recognised, their stories told and their history repeated.

“This month will be a celebration of our diversity in Camden and of the continuing positive influence of different cultures to London and the UK. I’d like to thank everyone who has helped bring these events together, particularly Camden Black Workers Group and Camden Unison.”

Hugo Pierre, Chair of Camden Black Workers Group, said: “The Windrush generation changed their lives by coming to the UK but also changed the UK too through hard work and challenge. To be black has to be equal. Camden Black Workers Group is celebrating Black History Month with their story which is relevant today to all generations and rich in lessons not just for black communities but all our communities.”

Other highlights of Black History Month in Camden include an evening of West African drumming with a poetry writing workshop at Keats House and curated tours and an exhibition at the British Library exploring the stories of the Windrush generation. Camden’s libraries will run special rhyme and storytime sessions for children under five years old throughout the month.
