Camden secures funding to support women and girls affected by violence

A multi-borough bid led by Camden Council has successfully secured £599,135 of Government funding to continue and expand a programme supporting women and girls in London who have been affected by violence.

The WiSER Project currently works with women aged 16 and over in Camden, Islington, Enfield and Haringey, who have experienced violence, face multiple difficult circumstances and find it difficult to access or engage with support available. It focuses on building women’s self-esteem, helping them overcome trauma, reducing risks they may face and helping them to make safe choices and access support. This recent allocation of funding allows the project to expand to Hackney and Waltham Forest.

Camden Council works with local authorities to deliver the project in partnership with Solace Women’s Aid, Fulfilling Lives Islington and Camden, NIA, Hopscotch and IMECE. The project also works closely with Women at the Well, who support women whose lives are affected by, or are at risk of being affected by, prostitution and AVA, who lead on training and evaluation.

The successful bid secures a portion of the £22m allocated by the Government across the country for projects to support domestic abuse survivors.

Councillor Angela Mason, Cabinet Member for Best Start in Life at Camden Council, said: “In Camden we are determined that no-one gets left behind and everyone has a voice – and that vision inspires our approach to tackling violence against women and supporting women who have been affected by it. Domestic violence, whether physical, sexual, psychological or financial, is unacceptable and something no-one should have to go through.

“Securing this funding is a boost to our strong partnership approach with specialist local organisations and our voluntary and community sector. Knowing we can now continue to deliver this project together, which is transforming the lives of women who have suffered violence and trauma, demonstrates our commitment to supporting residents affected by domestic violence and abuse ahead of White Ribbon Day.

“If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or know someone who is, please call our confidential advice service, Camden Safety Net, on 020 7974 2526.”

Camden Council’s Camden Safety Net provides services to survivors of domestic abuse and/or sexual violence as well as to children affected by violence. Domestic violence can affect any person of any race, gender, sexuality or age.

If you feel you might be experiencing domestic abuse or want to know more about it, watch our video ‘Know you’re not alone’ and share it on social media.

White Ribbon Day is on Sunday 25 November 2018. White Ribbon UK’s mission is to end violence against women once and for all. If it hurts, it’s not love.
