Camden council tackles environmental crimes in the borough

Camden Council’s cabinet agreed to raise the level of Fixed Penalty Notices for a range of environmental crimes at its meeting last night (Wednesday 20 February).

The council want to ensure that Camden is a clean, vibrant and sustainable place and that people spoiling the environment should face the consequences of their actions.

Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Improving Camden's Environment
“Fly-tipping, littering, and businesses putting their waste out wrong can have a huge impact on Camden’s streets. Invariably, taxpayers end up footing the bill to clean up after other people’s irresponsibility. Fixed Penalty Notice levels have not changed since 2006. So we want to take stronger action against those who commit these types of environmental crimes.”
Councillor Adam Harrison, Cabinet Member for Improving Camden's Environment

The council uses a range of powers to tackle illegal dumping from businesses and residents and will prosecute offenders of large-scale fly tipping through the courts where it is appropriate.

FPNs make up the majority of the council’s environmental enforcement activity as an alternative to expensive prosecutions, ensuring that straightforward cases do take up too much council time or burden the courts.

In April 2018, the Environmental Offences (Fixed Penalties) (England) 2007 Regulations came into force. These regulations increased the maximum level of fixed penalties that councils can impose for environmental offences.

If an FPN is paid within 10 days of issue the amount is reduced to the discount penalty.

The new penalties will be ratified at the Full Council meeting on Monday 25 February.

The revised FPNs charges will be introduced from Monday 1 April 2019.
