Camden celebrates International Women’s Day

Camden Council's official celebration of International Women's Day 2018 took place yesterday (Thursday, 8 March), starting with a ‘speed networking’ event enabling 50 students to meet inspirational local women.

The event, in collaboration with Camden Giving, gave young women aged 14 to 16 from our schools the chance to meet 35 successful women from businesses, cultural and academic organisations, hospitality and catering, local charities, the NHS and the council.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made towards equality between sexes, whilst also highlighting the areas where progress still needs to be made.

“In this, the second decade of the 21st century, we need to strive to remove the remaining barriers that stand in the way of women in all areas of life.

“The fact that 50 young women came to our speed networking event to talk about their future careers shows their determination to make the most of the amazing opportunities here in Camden and beyond.”
Councillor Abdul Hai, Cabinet Member for Young People and Cohesion

Meanwhile, taking inspiration from the women’s suffrage movement, Camden Council is launching our annual arts programme, called ‘Camden VOX’. Camden VOX will celebrate and explore themes of equality, place, history and power. The programme offers free and low-cost arts and cultural events for those who live, work in and visit the borough. Camden is committed to addressing inequalities by helping to make arts opportunities accessible to everyone, developing new cultural audiences, and encouraging participation in the arts from underrepresented groups

Camden VOX will feature theatre, pop-up performances, song, spoken word, exhibitions, commissions and artist-led, drop-in family friendly workshops across the borough.

“2018 marks a series of important anniversaries that have helped to shape democracy in the UK, particularly the Women’s Suffrage movement. Camden VOX takes inspiration from these events and looks to celebrate and explore what it means to live in a democracy in 2018.

“Through celebrating Camden’s unique spirit, which is rebellious, creative and progressive, and working with partners and key cultural institutions in the borough, we aim to offer our residents and visitors a thought-provoking and engaging arts and cultural programme for 2018.

“In developing our recent London Borough of Culture bid, we drew together and galvanised Camden’s cultural community, uniting and collectively promoting the huge cultural offer of our borough, which Camden VOX is a fine example of.”
Councillor Jonathan Simpson, Cabinet Member for Promoting Culture and Communities
